Title: Into the Wild Pdf

"God, he was a smart kid..." So why did Christopher McCandless trade a bright future--a college education, material comfort, uncommon ability and charm--for death by starvation in an abandoned bus in the woods of Alaska? This is the question that Jon Krakauer's book tries to answer. While it doesn't—cannot—answer the question with certainty, Into the Wild does shed considerable light along the way. Not only about McCandless's "Alaskan odyssey," but also the forces that drive people to drop out of society and test themselves in other ways. Krakauer quotes Wallace Stegner's writing on a young man who similarly disappeared in the Utah desert in the 1930s: "At 18, in a dream, he saw himself ... wandering through the romantic waste places of the world. No man with any of the juices of boyhood in him has forgotten those dreams." Into the Wild shows that McCandless, while extreme, was hardly unique; the author makes the hermit into one of us, something McCandless himself could never pull off. By book's end, McCandless isn't merely a newspaper clipping, but a sympathetic, oddly magnetic personality. Whether he was "a courageous idealist, or a reckless idiot," you won't soon forget Christopher McCandless. "Terrifying...Eloquent...A heart-rending drama of human yearning."--New York Times"A narrative of arresting force.  Anyone who ever fancied wandering off to face nature on its own harsh terms should give a look.  It's gripping stuff."--Washington Post"Compelling and tragic...Hard to put down."  --San Francisco Chronicle"Engrossing...with a telling eye for detail, Krakauer has captured the sad saga of a stubborn, idealistic young man."--Los Angeles Times Book Review"It may be nonfiction, but Into the Wild is a mystery of the highest order." --Entertainment Weekly

In April 1992 a young man from a well-to-do family hitchhiked to Alaska and walked alone into the wilderness north of Mt. McKinley. His name was Christopher Johnson McCandless. He had given $25,000 in savings to charity, abandoned his car and most of his possessions, burned all the cash in his wallet, and invented a new life for himself. Four months later, his decomposed body was found by a moose hunter.  How McCandless came to die is the unforgettable story of Into the Wild.

Immediately after graduating from college in 1991, McCandless had roamed through the West and Southwest on a vision quest like those made by his heroes Jack London and John Muir.  In the Mojave Desert he abandoned his car, stripped it of its license plates, and burned all of his  cash.  He would give himself a new name, Alexander Supertramp, and , unencumbered by money and belongings, he would be free to wallow in the raw, unfiltered experiences that nature presented.  Craving a blank spot on the map, McCandless simply threw the maps away.  Leaving behind his desperate parents and sister, he vanished into the wild.

Jon Krakauer constructs a clarifying prism through which he reassembles the disquieting facts of McCandless's short life.  Admitting an interst that borders on obsession, he searches for the clues to the dries and desires that propelled McCandless.  Digging deeply, he takes an inherently compelling mystery and unravels the larger riddles it holds: the profound pull of the American wilderness on our imagination; the allure of high-risk activities to young men of a certain cast of mind; the complex, charged bond between fathers and sons.

When McCandless's innocent mistakes turn out to be irreversible and fatal, he becomes the stuff of tabloid headlines and is dismissed for his naiveté, pretensions, and hubris.  He is said  to have had a death wish but wanting to die is a very different thing from being compelled to look over the edge. Krakauer brings McCandless's uncompromising pilgrimage out of the shadows, and the peril, adversity , and renunciation sought by this enigmatic young man are illuminated with a rare understanding--and not an ounce of sentimentality. Mesmerizing, heartbreaking, Into the Wild is a tour de force. The power and luminosity of Jon Krakauer's stoytelling blaze through every page.

Great Biography This book gave a great insight of the path Chris McCandless's troubled life took.I watched the movie "Into The Wild" a few years back and have always been curious and saddened to think about Chris's journey. This book seemed to clear the story a bit. Sometimes I had a lump in my throat thinking that this is not a "character" in a made up story but a real life that seemed to yearn for a peace that only existed in his heart. Jon Krakauer does a great job of giving us a key hole view of "Alex's" life. The good times even when he had nothing. I personally feel like unfortunately Chris was a troubled individual weather it was mental imbalance or emotional disconnect and after this book I feel so sad for his torment. The movie left me disliking his parents, but this book turned that emotion completely around. And I loved the Epilogue. Thank you Jon Krakauer for that. If the movie intrigued you most definitely read the book.Better than the film Much better than the film of the same title.Whether you think the subject of this novel died due to his own stupidity and hubris or of a simple mistake while he was making a noble, philosophical pilgrimage, this book is gripping and fascinating.Enjoyable and Poignant Book I watched the movie, "Into The Wild" and it really moved me and made me want to buy the book. It is very readable and non judgmental. The book really captures the essence of Chris McCandless and his need to live a very unconventional lifestyle. Mr. Krakauer did an amazing amount of research for this book. I enjoyed Chapter 14 of this book in which Jon Krakauer describes his climb of the Devil's Thumb when he was 23 years old and how it nearly ended in disaster. Mr. Krakauer was able to feel empathy for Chris McCandless because of his own adventurous youth. Chapters 8 and 9 tell of Gene Rosellini, John Waterman, Carl McCunn, and Everett Ruess, other unconventional people who also perished in the wilderness in a quest for adventure. The essence of the book is that most of us do dumb or dangerous things in our youth, but we survive and grow older. Chris McCandless, Everett Ruess and the others never got that second chance. I saw a short video on youtube in which a man obtained the jacket that Chris McCandless had when he died and this man found Chris's drivers license, social security card, and about $300 in cash in a secret compartment of the garment. Proof that Chris had no thought of suicide when he embarked on his Alaskan adventure. He fully intended to come back from the wilderness. "Into the Wild" is a a short but very poignant book.

Title: Owning Your Own Shadow Pdf Understanding the Dark Side of the Psyche

A bestselling author shows how we can reclaim and make peace with the "shadow" side of our personality.

A thoughtful and perceptive look at the Jungian "Shadow" "Owning Your Own Shadow" discusses the negative and positive aspects of the Shadow (essentially, psychologist Carl Jung's concept of the negative side of one's personality). This book was the first I have read by Robert A. Johnson. His writing flows fairly well and has a conversational tone. Use of jargon is fairly minimal so even if you have just a passing familiarity with Jungian psychology you will have few problems reading and understanding the book.At 118 pages, "Owning Your Own Shadow" is a quick read - though you may find yourself laying it aside at times to mull over what you've read. I've read several of Jung's works and have to admit this book was not what I expected - mostly in a good way. After briefly discussing the concept of the Shadow, most of the book covers the ways in which a self-aware individual can explore their Shadow and begin to channel its energy in a positive way in their life. The book is not in a self-help workbook format, more its discussion is intended to impart some insights which will help one explore their own Shadow and recognize its workings in others. There are a few downsides to the book. Though effective, Johnson's sometimes breezy conversational writing can lack focus and at times left me wondering "where are we going here?". He also approaches the topic from a heavily Christian (specifically Roman Catholic) viewpoint, which some readers may find annoying. The book was written in 1991 and is thus approaching 20 years old as of this writing, but it seemed to me that it could benefit from broadening its perspective. I'd be very interested in seeing how some of the ideas played out here apply in a non-Western context, though that'd probably be better suited to an academic conference paper. All in all, a very satisfying book. If you have any interest in the Shadow, or have realized that in your life or those around you there have been recurring themes of someone (perhaps inexplicably) acting against what seem to be their best interests, you will find reading "Owning Your Own Shadow" a worthwhile read.Easy read for the lay person My therapist always had great book recommendations, and this is one of them. I actually went on to read Robert Johnson's "We" and "She" because of this book. It's a very insightful book, and it isn't too heavy on the psychological jargon for someone who isn't studying to be a therapist or psychologist. Easy to understand and filled with stories and references to myth that make it engaging as well. I've recommended his books to lots of friends who are struggling with themselves or relationships...or both.Interesting takeaways but... I was suggested this book as a foundational reading in psychology and self-interpretation. It is surely interesting and thanks to the metaphors, anecdotes and myths presented in it, it helps simplify, visualize and understand real life’s situations. On the other hand I found it too much unbalanced in favor of the spiritual/religious side of life interpretation, so I am really not sure if the author presents his thoughts with a validated and scientific point of view.

In 2012, Boyle joined the Boston Red Sox coaching staff as a strength and conditioning consultant for the team, which later won the World Series. His client list over the years reads like a Who's Who of athletic success, including retired American football defensive end Marcellus Wiley, 2012 Olympic judo gold medalist Kayla Harrison, and Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge. Boyle's range of experience includes training athletes from the middle school level to all-stars in most major professional sports.

Train to perform at the highest level with the lowest risk of injury. New Functional Training for Sports, Second Edition produces the best results on the court, field, track, and mat, not just in the weight room.

Michael Boyle, one of the world's leading sport performance coaches, presents the concepts, methods, exercises, and programs that maximize athletes' movements in competition. A series of functional assessments help in determining the design of a specific plan for each athlete. Self-reinforcing progressions in exercises for the lower body, core, upper body, and ultimately total body give athletes the balance, proprioception, stability, strength, and power they require for excelling in their sports. Sample programs assist in the customization process and ensure each aspect of preparation for physical performance.

Boyle also draws on the latest research and his wealth of experience to offer programming advice and recommendations on foam rolling, stretching, and dynamic warm-ups.

New Functional Training for Sports goes beyond traditional exercise descriptions and explanations, incorporating full-color, high-definition composites of foundational movements as well as online access to video demonstrations, commentary, and analysis of key exercises.

New Functional Training for Sports is a refined and expanded version of Boyle's original work published more than a decade previously. This edition offers the most current functional training expertise to apply to your specific purposes.

Highly recommend Tremendous edition! Boyle is THE authority on modern functional training for athletes of all ability levels. The second edition refines the first edition by including Boyle's years worth of additional training and testing of movements, principals, and progressions since the original Functional Training for Sports was published. That's what's so great about Boyle's publications: he seemingly holds nothing back. Rather than rely on theory, Boyle educates the reader on what programming principals and movements actually produce results and why. Highly recommend for coaches and athletes alike. You will not be disappointed, although you may find yourself rethinking your current programming.Still it's good to have the resource to go to So video is only available in certain compatible formats. Says so in the description, but in way too small a type face in my opinion. So if you're really only motivated based on the vids, watch out.Book is a solid collection of exercises. I would be surprised though if you were a personal trainer, or even collegiate level athlete in the last 10 or 15 years, if you didn't already have some exposure to these exercises and progression formats. Still it's good to have the resource to go to. My motivation for buying it was that I keep injuring myself in small ways, and I'd like to stop. So far it looks like this will fit the bill. I like the attention given to how different kinds of training fit together, and how one could use recovery and foundation building programs that specifically anticipate strength training or competitive sports. As a plus, while trying to figure out why the videos weren't working, I reached out to the author, who responded in about 5 minutes. He seems very willing to help if he can. Unfortunately I don't think he can actually help you do any of the exercises. That part is up to you.Mike Boyle is one of the best! Okay, if you are simply looking for an exercise resource to help you get your swoll on and hit max GAINZ then this book is probably NOT for you. However if you are interesting in learning how the body moves and, more importantly, how to exercise to maximize your movement (and performance) potential then hit the 'buy' button immediately.Mike is one of the most well -respected strength coaches in the Strength and Conditioning community. He has helped win 2 national championships in hockey and has worked with numerous professional athletes as well as developing systems that help younger athletes earn college scholarships.Even if you are not an athlete, you should be training like one. Mike's method is to enhance the mobility and stability of the body before increasing the strength - when it comes to performance automobiles you don't want to drop in a large engine unless you have the steering, suspension and brakes capable of handing the excess power, conditioning programs are the same - fine tune the chassis before boosting the horsepower. If you don't have a formal background/education in exercise science you may not understand (or care) the 'why' behind what makes his exercises so effective, but you will definitely be able to apply the how immediately. As an author of numerous fitness/exercise science articles Mike is one of my go-to resources when I want good information for how to use exercise to change the body. Buy this book, you'll be glad you did!
