Superb and creepy storytelling from a true-crime master.” —Ron Franscell, author of Alice & Gerald: A Homicidal Love Story“A master of true crime returns with a vengeance. After a decade detour into novels, Gregg Olsen is back with a dark tale of nonfiction from the Pacific Northwest that will keep you awake long after the lights have gone out. And yet this story is about hope and renewal in the face of evil and how three sisters can find the goodness in the world after surviving the worst it has to offer. Classic true crime in the tradition of In Cold Blood and The Stranger Beside Me.” —James Renner, author of True Crime Addict“This nightmare walked on two legs and some of her victims called her mom. #1 New York Times bestselling author Gregg Olsen’s shocking and empowering true-crime story of three sisters determined to survive their mother’s house of horrors.

After more than a decade, when sisters Nikki, Sami, and Tori Knotek hear the word mom, it claws like an eagle’s talons, triggering memories that have been their secret since childhood. Until now.

For years, behind the closed doors of their farmhouse in Raymond, Washington, their sadistic mother, Shelly, subjected her girls to unimaginable abuse, degradation, torture, and psychic terrors. Through it all, Nikki, Sami, and Tori developed a defiant bond that made them far less vulnerable than Shelly imagined. Even as others were drawn into their mother’s dark and perverse web, the sisters found the strength and courage to escape an escalating nightmare that culminated in multiple murders.

Harrowing and heartrending, If You Tell is a survivor’s story of absolute evil—and the freedom and justice that Nikki, Sami, and Tori risked their lives to fight for. Sisters forever, victims no more, they found a light in the darkness that made them the resilient women they are today—loving, loved, and moving on.

Don't waste your money. Sick book about sick people, protected by more sick, irresponsible people. I had no idea that this book would go into such morbid detail. Nor can I understand who this book was directed at? I read less than one quarter of it, trying to see where it was leading, but it just rambled on and on including every horrible act that any person could ever do to another human being. Adults who saw what was happening but chose to do nothing and were then surprised when more terrible things happened? Right! (I.e., A teenager just for the attention, falsely accuses her father of raping her. And then the father, when proven innocent, and who was supposedly devastated, just drops the whole episode and continues to think of her and treat her as his "special little princess" - even as he watches her grow older and lie about and physically abuse others, including (and especially) her own children. She goes through three "shy, caring and once wonderful" (!) husbands who end up being afraid of her too, and they also watch her brutally torture, and actually end up helping her abuse their children. And then there's the mother of this insane women, who witnessed all this but just wasn't sure exactly what to do to stop everything! It's crazy!) I believe the author - that the story is actually true. I believe that there are ignorant irresponsible insane people in the world. But I do not need to read page after page of details of those who allow insane people to destroy the lives of innocent children year after year. It's those who stand by and allow this kind of torture to continue that are the real criminally insane in my opinion. For what it's worth, the writing/grammar in the book itself was way below par. But maybe it's to be expected from the level of education of someone who would hope to make a profit from this kind of "entertainment." Don't waste your time or money. I regret that this book exists for those who are already sick and might be searching for this kind of brutal imagery.A similar story is mine. I am in my 50's and have been telling my story for the first time ever in therapy. I relate to understanding yet not understanding why I didn't seek help or why I stayed loyal, feeling obligated to "not wanting to hurt" my parents by letting out the secret. I have been moving from victim to survivor through engagement in intense (and many times scary) therapy sessions. I am grateful to have support from 1 of my 3 siblings who also acknowledges the crazy childhood. Though this book was intermittently intense to read, I know that others would understand my story. Thank you Nikki, Sami and Tori for sharing. RIP Kathy, Shane and Ron.Sadistic, dark and Vengeful Mother! You Can't Put it Down! Shelly was Sadistic, Dark and Vengeful from the time she was a young girl and it carried on as an adult and sadly as a Mother as well. Could her Sadistic personality disorder been inherited from her Grandmother? You Can't Put this Book Down but at times you don't want to read anymore! Gregg Did a great job, hooking the reader right from the beginning and he takes you on an emotional roller coaster through tragedies and the lives of three sisters and their Mother Shelly. Fantastic True Life Crime that takes place in Washington State!

“The combined wisdom of a legendary hospice physician together with a journalist and experienced caregiver makes this book feel like a loving friend who is by our side with practical advice on the medical, legal, logistical, and emotional aspects of an event that awaits us all. This is a book that every family should have, the equivalent of Dr. Spock but for this other phase of life.” — Abraham Verghese, author of Cutting for Stone “A Beginner’s Guide to the End is honest, funny, luminous, and essential. Full of real-world advice and hard-won insight, it’s a practical guide to dying that is actually much more about living.” — Lucy Kalanithi, author of the epilogue to When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi“A gentle, knowledgeable guide to a fate we all share.” — The Washington Post “Miller and Berger, through their honesty and deep experience, help us to live the best life possible with a serious illness. This is a beautiful, poignant, expert, and human handbook for all of us.”  — Susan Block, MD, Professor of Psychiatry and Medicine, Harvard Medical School“I wish I’d had this book when I needed it. Death and dying are not subjects that many people are comfortable talking about, but it’s hugely important to be as prepared as you can be—emotionally, physically, practically, financially, and spiritually. This book may be the most important guide you could have.” — Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Big Magic and Eat Pray Love“‘You know what would be fun today? Reading a book about death,’ said no one ever. So you can imagine my surprise when I opened these pages and found myself smiling on the first one. BJ Miller and Shoshana Berger have done something impressive: they’re written a book about dying that’s not only moving and practical, but also delightful to read.” — Adam Grant, co-author of Option B and author of Give and Take and Originals“When it comes to the final journey, we are all beginners. Navigating the complexities of serious illness requires grace and grit. With elegant simplicity and tender, earthy honesty, this beginner’s guide explains how to prepare, what possible routes you might take, mis-turns to avoid, and the beauty you might see along the way.” — Ira Byock, MD, Founder & Chief Medical Director, Institute for Human Caring“There are many times in my personal life and my medical education when I could have used this book. In their clear and compelling guide, Miller and Berger help us understand how to approach one of the most important but least understood phases of our life. Their honest reflections and sharp insights will change lives for the better.”  — Vivek Murthy, MD, former Surgeon General of the United States“If you are sure you would never read a book about how to face death, especially long before you need it, A Beginner’s Guide to the End: Practical Advice for Living Life and Facing Death just might convince you it wouldn’t be bad to have on the shelf... The book blends practical information with compassionate advice for facing our own death or the death of a loved one.” — Next Avenue BJ Miller, MD, is a hospice and palliative medicine physician who has worked in many settings—inpatient, outpatient, hospice facility, and home—and now sees patients and families at the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. Miller speaks all over the country and beyond on the theme of living well in the face of death. He has been profiled in The New York Times and interviewed by Oprah Winfrey, Tim Ferriss, and Krista Tippett.Shoshana Berger is the editorial director at IDEO, where she has worked on projects ranging from the end of life to modern Judaism to school lunch. She was a senior editor at WIRED, and has written for the New York Times, Fast Company, Time, WIRED, Popular Science, Marie Claire, and Quartz. She cofounded the DIY design magazine, ReadyMade, later turning it into a book, Ready Made: How to Make (Almost) Everything.

“A gentle, knowledgeable guide to a fate we all share” (The Washington Post): the first and only all-encompassing action plan for the end of life.

“There is nothing wrong with you for dying,” hospice physician B.J. Miller and journalist and caregiver Shoshana Berger write in A Beginner’s Guide to the End. “Our ultimate purpose here isn’t so much to help you die as it is to free up as much life as possible until you do.”

Theirs is a clear-eyed and big-hearted action plan for approaching the end of life, written to help readers feel more in control of an experience that so often seems anything but controllable. Their book offers everything from step-by-step instructions for how to do your paperwork and navigate the healthcare system to answers to questions you might be afraid to ask your doctor, like whether or not sex is still okay when you’re sick. Get advice for how to break the news to your employer, whether to share old secrets with your family, how to face friends who might not be as empathetic as you’d hoped, and how to talk to your children about your will. (Don’t worry: if anyone gets snippy, it’ll likely be their spouses, not them.) There are also lessons for survivors, like how to shut down a loved one’s social media accounts, clean out the house, and write a great eulogy.

An honest, surprising, and detail-oriented guide to the most universal of all experiences, A Beginner’s Guide to the End is “a book that every family should have, the equivalent of Dr. Spock but for this other phase of life” (New York Times bestselling author Dr. Abraham Verghese).

A valuable resource and a must read What a thoughtful, thorough, meaningful book and resource. It treats a delicate subject with an extraordinarily loving yet practical tone. It is like having a good friend there to answer any and all questions. It is recommended both to start thinking about this topic abstractly and as a practical guide as we face this time of life. Thanks for providing such a great resource and writing such a great book!Extraordinary! This book is long overdue and urgently needed as we grapple with the issue of death and dying, while trying to live life to the fullest. It's clear, comprehensive and covered every aspect of this phase of life. It's both a great read now and as a reference manual as needed. The stories are poignant, compassionate and convey a deep understanding of the issues.Thank you, BJ and Shoshana.Very practical! This is a “must-have“ book for any and all.

Title: Magic Hour Pdf A Novel
Author: Kristin Hannah
Published Date: 2007-11
Page: 469

“One of [Kristin Hannah’s] most compelling and riveting novels.”—Booklist Kristin Hannah is the #1 New York Times bestselling author of many acclaimed novels, including The Great Alone, The Nightingale, and Fly Away. She and her husband live in the Pacific Northwest and Hawaii.

From the #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Nightingale and The Great Alone comes an incandescent story about the resilience of the human spirit, the triumph of hope, and the meaning of home.

In the rugged Pacific Northwest lies the Olympic National Forest—nearly a million acres of impenetrable darkness and impossible beauty. From deep within this old growth forest, a six-year-old girl appears. Speechless and alone, she offers no clue as to her identity, no hint of her past.

Having retreated to her western Washington hometown after a scandal left her career in ruins, child psychiatrist Dr. Julia Cates is determined to free the extraordinary little girl she calls Alice from a prison of unimaginable fear and isolation. To reach her, Julia must discover the truth about Alice’s past—although doing so requires help from Julia’s estranged sister, a local police officer. The shocking facts of Alice’s life test the limits of Julia’s faith and strength, even as she struggles to make a home for Alice—and for herself.

“One of [Kristin Hannah’s] most compelling and riveting novels.”—Booklist

Fun read, not as good as others, rather trite This was a really fun read, and I had it read in about a day and a half (yay for a snow day!). However, the book left me with a bit of disappointment, and it was not as rewarding as reading, say, “The Great Alone” by the same author. While the plot was quite unique, the actual characters seemed trite. Typical “gorgeous sisters” and “jaw droppingly handsome men” involved, here. The romances involved were also trite and predictable, with a bedroom scene thrown in for good measure. Both “handsome men” had unrealistically emotional roles in these romances. The actual “wild child” storyline was interesting, although I also felt there were a few parts that seemed unrealistic. There was a nice bit of twist at the end so the entire story wasn’t entirely predictable. I did like that her story was based on an interesting subject that had it’s roots in realism, and I liked how parts of the story were from the child’s point of view.Overall the book was fun to read, but it didn’t stand out to me as a favorite, and it often felt corny and trite. I feel like the subject matter could have gone from good to amazing if the characterization would have been done a bit differently. Still. it made for a relaxing snow day read.Predictable but the reader remains engaged throughout the novel. I gave this book five stars despite its predictability. The author clearly understands the subtle nuances of interpersonal interactions. This adds a reality to her characters as the reader identified with attributes of the protagonists. The subject matter of the book is atypical, which adds to its appeal.A book to get involved in. Magic Hour was a good book with great characters and content that makes you think a bit in that "what do I think?" fashion. It is interesting to focus on the characters and how they develop. They are good role models that remind us that we are not done until we are done! I felt that the situation was somewhat predictable although it did have a detour that I wasn't expecting. I enjoyed it and would certainly read more of her work.

It's Garry Shandling's Book Pdf

ISBN: 0525510842
Title: It's Garry Shandling's Book Pdf
Author: Judd Apatow
Published Date: 2019
Page: 472

Judd Apatow is one of the most important comic minds of his generation. He wrote and directed the films The 40-Year-Old Virgin (co-written with Steve Carell), Knocked Up, Funny People, and This Is 40; he directed Trainwreck; and his producing credits include Superbad, Bridesmaids, and Anchorman. Apatow was also the executive producer of Freaks and Geeks and HBO’s Girls, and he created Undeclared and co-created the Emmy Award-winning television program The Ben Stiller Show. He is the author of Sick in the Head and editor of the collection I Found This Funny. Judd Apatow lives in Los Angeles with his wife, Leslie Mann, and their two daughters, Maude and Iris. INTRODUCTIONBy Judd ApatowWhen Garry died suddenly we were all lost. I am a hoarder. I try to hold on to everything. My first instinct was to hoard Garry. He had always been my mentor, my friend, and my greatest inspiration in creativity and life. He was not a perfect man, but he was always trying to reach the next level. When I was a young man he handed me a Buddhist book called Catching a Feather on a Fan, and it brought spirituality into my life for the first time. I dealt with this loss by refusing to let go of any of Garry. I am pretty sure that goes against all of the tenets of Buddhism.Garry had a large home that he built himself and was never entirely comfortable in. The joke with his friends was how he always complained about it. He would hire people to draw up designs about how to fix it, and then would never like them enough to actually move forward. When I entered his house to help deal with his material possessions, I wondered what I would find. He never seemed like the kind of person who kept anything. I didn’t see him as sentimental. I remember one year, way before streaming, I got him every episode of Inside the Actors Studio on VHS for his birthday. As I handed it to him, I realized he would never watch it and wondered what black hole it would disappear into. When I first went through his office it seemed like there wasn’t much to deal with, barely a personal photo. All of his awards were in a trophy case he had built next to his washer and dryer. He had a loft above an office next to his garage that had some boxes from his TV-series days.It felt like he was living his Buddhist life, not holding on to the past, trying to live in the moment. Then I opened a closet and found a stack of boxes. I soon realized that Garry kept everything. He seemed to just chuck items into boxes, then put them in closets and never look at them again. I opened one and found a box of letters Garry had written to his college-era girlfriend. Someone told me that after she died, her parents sent them to Garry. I opened another box and found letters to his parents, his earliest joke notebooks, and reel-to-reel tapes of a young Garry performing his earliest stand-up act alone into a tape recorder. It went on and on, box after box. His house had no family photos displayed, but there was a box of hundreds of childhood photographs perfectly preserved. The most important find was a trunk that contained all of his journals since 1978. I quietly debated whether or not I should read them. Twenty seconds later I started reading them. I was afraid I would lose respect for him if I knew all his secrets and deepest feelings. What I discovered was that he was an even better person than I had realized. Decade after decade I just read about a man struggling to figure out how to be more open and loving. There were some details about conflicts with friends, girlfriends, and work associates, but the vast majority of his writings were reminders to himself about the man he wanted to be. In his private thoughts he would constantly remind himself to let go of his ego and to seek evolution as a person. He also had a lot of amazing jokes, many of which never saw the light of day.In the years before his death he had considered projects that would be based on these journals. I took that as meaning that Garry knew there was wisdom in his journey, which he wanted to share with others. People who have seen our documentary, The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling, told me how impactful his diary entries were to them. Some even took photos of the screen. This book is the final major Garry Shandling project. I am very honored to be a part of excavating photos, jokes, journals, script pages, interviews, and anything that I thought would help illuminate this fascinating, brilliant, and kind man. This is the ultimate hoarding of Garry. I hope you enjoy it.

From Judd Apatow comes an intimate portrait of his mentor, the legendary stand-up comic and star of The Larry Sanders Show, with never-before-seen journal entries and photos, as well as new contributions by fellow comedians and writers.

Garry Shandling was a singular trailblazer in the comedy world. His two hit shows, It’s Garry Shandling’s Show and The Larry Sanders Show, broke new ground and influenced future sitcoms like 30 Rock and Curb Your Enthusiasm, and his stand-up laid the foundation for a whole new generation of comics. There’s no one better to tell Shandling’s story than Judd Apatow—Shandling gave Apatow one of his first jobs and remained his mentor for the rest of his life—and the book expands on Apatow’s Emmy Award-winning HBO documentary, The Zen Diaries of Garry Shandling.

Here, Apatow has gathered journal entries, photographs, and essays for a close-up look at the artist who turned his gaze back onto the world of show business. Beyond his success, though, Shandling struggled with fame, the industry of art, and the childhood loss of his brother, which forever affected his personal and professional lives. His diaries show Shandling to be self-aware and insightful, revealing a deep philosophical and spiritual side. Contributions by comedians and other leading lights of the industry, as well as people who grew up with Shandling, along with never-before-seen pieces of scripts and brilliant jokes that he never performed, shed new light on every facet of his life and work. This book is the final word on the lasting impact of the great Garry Shandling.

If you’re a fan of Garry Shandling, this is a book you will treasure forever ❤️ “It’s Garry Shandling’s Book” is a collection of all things Garry. His good buddy and creative partner, Jay Apatow, has put together a massive assortment, (this book is in excess of 450 pages), pictures, hand written notes, (that are scribbled on napkins, pieces of paper, journal entries, calendar pages), tickets, passes, scripts, annotations...Just about anything you can imagine finding in the office of this comedic genius is included in the pages of this tome. It’s really hard to say much about the writing style because so much of the book feels like Garry is talking or it’s like watching a really long episode of “The Larry Sanders Show” - pure fabulousness! Apatow includes insights from contemporaries of Shandling’s; he was well respected and the list of folks he helped open doors for was enlightening and their words heartfelt. These walk-of-famers add to the pictorial prowess that makes this book something special. The real heart and soul of this volume is Garry’s brother, Barry, who passed away in their childhood from Cystic Fibrosis. This traumatic event so profoundly effected Garry that is colored the remainder of his life and humor stylings. He was very much the persona we saw on the tv, in his personal life, a bit shy, intensely personal and fiercely loyal to his friends and family.“It’s Garry Shandling’s Book” is the perfect gift, not only for his fans but also for those with an affinity for comedy, classic TV or a fine, feel good memoir πŸŽ„πŸŽ❤️πŸŽπŸŽ„πŸ“šBRAVO Judd Apatow. A Beautiful Scrapbook of Garry’s Life and Portrait of a Wonderful Human Being BRAVO Judd Apatow... The documentary series on Garry's life was beautiful and insightful as to what an incredible human Garry was. The book is like having a part of Garry in my home, and I'm grateful to Judd for sharing with us his (Garry's) thoughts/notes on life, love, and puzzle pieces of his life whether or not they all fit perfectly. He was an amazing human being and I appreciate that Judd dedicated a part of his own life to share with all of us who Garry was behind the mask of a comedian. I always loved Garry's comedy and through Judd's work, I will always feel an even deeper connection to him. Thank you, Judd... It's a beautiful book full of notes and amazing photographs. Not Exactly Kindle-Friendly The Kindle version of this book is difficult to read because Garry Shandling's handwriting isn't all that legible as it is, let alone in a non-print format. I ended up returning the Kindle version for this reason, it was too difficult to read the scrapbook-type notes. I'll likely try to pick this up at the library to read a hard copy version.
