The Golden Compass Free Pdf

ISBN: B0000W6SPE
Title: The Golden Compass Pdf His Dark Materials, Book 1

***Coming soon! A new HBO series, His Dark Materials, based on Pullman's Books***

The modern fantasy classic that Entertainment Weekly named an "All-Time Greatest Novel" and Newsweek hailed as a "Top 100 Book of All Time".

Philip Pullman takes listeners to a world where humans have animal familiars and where parallel universes are within reach.

Lyra is rushing to the cold, far North, where witch clans and armored bears rule. North, where the Gobblers take the children they steal - including her friend Roger. North, where her fearsome uncle Asriel is trying to build a bridge to a parallel world.

Can one small girl make a difference in such great and terrible endeavors? This is Lyra: a savage, a schemer, a liar, and as fierce and true a champion as Roger or Asriel could want.

But what Lyra doesn't know is that to help one of them will be to betray the other....

A masterwork of storytelling and suspense, Philip Pullman's award-winning The Golden Compass is the first in the His Dark Materials series, which continues with The Subtle Knife and The Amber Spyglass.

A Worthy Read For Younger AND Older Readers This book seems to be written for a younger audience, and I have no doubt that preteens and up could read it without difficulty, but at the same time I feel that a lot of the themes and the nuance could go over the heads of younger readers. The use of accents, speech patterns, dress, and behavior to denote class, the writing of younger characters to think and behave as young people would and do while still keeping things moving forward at a good pace and keeping things both exciting and logical, the politics and relationships between adult characters: these things may be appreciated much more by adult readers than their younger counterparts. This is definitely a book which can be enjoyed by a wide range of ages. Twists and turns are difficult puzzles, but there are enough clues that a younger detective could still see what's coming if they're paying attention. The plot is thrilling, often intense, moving, and fascinating. The cultural standards surrounding daemons alone could make up their own encyclopedia. Some have claimed this book to be religious in nature, but while it does *deal* with religion quite a bit, I do not find it to be in any way advocating for any particular faith. If anything it warns against the nature of organized religion to become corrupt (without demonizing the religion itself). If you are concerned about the nature of the 'daemon' characters, be aware that the term is used in the old Greek sense more so than the 'different spelling for demon' sense; 'a supernatural being of a nature between gods and humans'. They are loosely intended to be an external version of the soul or spirit, not anything evil or bad. Be warned, though: this book does include terrible things happening to children, and several deaths. Younger children may find it frightening or upsetting. If you give this to your child be prepared to sit down with them and discuss the book when they are finished reading.5 Reasons To Read His Dark Materials One of the most famous and beloved fantasy book trilogies you can think of. One that has been tried to adapt into a movie, but it failed, as some things (okay, most things!) are probably best left in book form. It’s so epic, I can only compare it to Harry Potter. If you haven’t read it yet, let me see if I can remedy that!★★★★★ Endless number of starsHis Dark Materials is a sweeping epic that tells of a story bigger than you can imagine, but it’s also a story told through the smallest characters – a story of a world, the fate of which lies in the hands of children. In a way, it’s all about the fight between good and evil, wisdom and darkness, but not in your usual fantasy sense. This is more philosophical than you might have expected it to be, but it’s also so imaginative, so full of adventure and unbelievable details, that you’ll never get bogged down with any of the philosophy. It’s a series that you can eat through a week – no matter how long the books actually are. You won’t sleep, if you have to.Reason #1.Don’t You Just Wish Your Cat Was Your Daemon??Daemons are talking animals that are… curiously, they’re part of you. They’re kind of your spirit animal, which also makes up part of your soul. It’s incredibly interesting, cute, and it goes so well with the story! You can talk to it, it will help you and defend you, and even if you’re utterly and completely alone, it will be your companion. It’s likely that by the end of the series, you will find yourself trying to figure out what your daemon would look like. Or maybe even does look like. (more on why I say that – in the actual book!)Reason #2.There Are Wonders And MysteriesObviously, it wouldn’t be cool if I just gave it away to you, now would it. But let me just tell you that there are worlds to explore. That there are reasons the entire world is falling, and you need to find them out. And the reasons are all pretty grand as well. It’s not your typical overused YA tropes either, for example – oh, this or that super power has just decided to thwart the main character and their family, and you need a special snowflake to fix it. No, it’s far better than that! That said, the main character (who is a little girl) IS special, and she’s IS key to the saving of the world, but she’s no special snowflake. We’re getting to that in the next point.Reason #3.The Characters Have Flaws, They’re Not PerfectHaving imperfect characters is great! Especially so, because it prevents the aforementioned ‘special snowflake’ syndrome. The main female character, Lyra, is as flawed as can be – she lies, she’s not loyal, she’s subject to other people’s manipulation. She is also ridiculously dramatic, and it’s maintained throughout the entire series in the way she talks (I specifically loved that!). The main male character Will is also a great character. He’s strong willed and he’s trustable, but he can also be ruthless, hard and cold. Both of them symbolize many things, but typical special snowflakes they are not. As for symbolizing? We get to point 4…Reason #4.The SymbolismThis story has layers upon layers of symbolism, mostly to do with mythologies, or namely – Christian mythologies, exposing them quite ruthlessly at times. This is magical and super interesting, merging religious symbolism with scientific fantasy (is that.. a thing, scientific fantasy..?), and weaving together a magical build of the world, of the universe. I will not tell you what the main characters (and many others) symbolize, because that would take away from your pleasure of discovering it yourself. However, if you are religious (not only Christian, basically, any religion that is based on a single deity) – be warned, as this book might seem controversial to you. It’s not kind to organized religion. You need an open mind to read it. If you are religious, and still really want to read it (which you should!), I suggest remembering that this is just fiction and it’s an invented world.Reason #5.The FeelsThis series ends with a bad case of the feels. As bad as it gets. But it’s also the kind of feels you want in a book! Basically, the kind of feels we all read books for. But please, prepare napkins.

How to Talk to Anyone Free Pdf

ISBN: B013GXDRKC
Title: How to Talk to Anyone Pdf 92 Little Tricks for Big Success in Relationships

"You'll not only break the ice, you'll melt it away with your new skills." -Larry King

"The lost art of verbal communication may be revitalized by Leil Lowndes." -Harvey McKay, author of How to Swim with the Sharks Without Being Eaten Alive

What is that magic quality that makes some people instantly loved and respected? Everyone wants to be their friend (or, if single, their lover). In business, they rise swiftly to the top of the corporate ladder. What is their "Midas touch?"

What it boils down to is a more skillful way of dealing with people.

The author has spent her career teaching people how to communicate for success. In her book How to Talk to Anyone, Lowndes offers 92 easy and effective sure-fire success techniques - she takes the listener from first meeting all the way up to sophisticated techniques used by the big winners in life. In this information-packed audiobook you'll find:

  • 9 ways to make a dynamite first impression
  • 14 ways to master small talk, "big talk," and body language
  • 14 ways to walk and talk like a VIP or celebrity
  • 6 ways to sound like an insider in any crowd
  • 7 ways to establish deep subliminal rapport with anyone
  • 9 ways to feed someone's ego (and know when NOT to!)
  • 11 ways to make your phone a powerful communications tool
  • 15 ways to work a party like a politician works a room
  • 7 ways to talk with tigers and not get eaten alive

In her trademark entertaining and straight-shooting style, Leil gives the techniques catchy names so you'll remember them when you really need them, including: "Rubberneck the Room," "Be a Copyclass," "Come Hither Hands," "Bare Their Hot Button," "The Great Scorecard in the Sky," and "Play the Tombstone Game," for big success in your social life, romance, and business.

How to Talk to Anyone, which is an update of her popular book, Talking the Winner's Way (see the 5-star reviews of the latter) is based on solid research about techniques that work!

By the way, don't confuse How to Talk to Anyone with one of Leil's previous books, How to Talk to Anybody About Anything. This one is completely different!

This review is just for the Kindle book. It ... This review is just for the Kindle book. It was scanned in badly and has so many spelling errors in it that it's completely unreadable. It has at least one spelling error per sentence. I'm stuck with it since there's no possibility of a refund, but learn from my mistake!Wonderful, however, not all relevant to a college student. I struggle with talking to others; specifically: talking to those who don't know me well, or share my interests. (Which is most of whom I find myself speaking to) To me, many of the tips in the book feel like common sense, but are things I fail to do nonetheless. They are things I have to see in writing, usually provided with subtleties that I didn't consider. The most valuable tips for somebody like myself are those in the first half of the book. Later on, they begin to be more business related, but I can still see their value, despite currently being in college. The book gets five stars from me because it provides tons of valuable advice; in addition, Leil keeps it interesting by giving personal examples and stories alongside her tricks. I fully intend to come back to this book to help make these tricks habit. After a full read, it becomes a guide, you'll look back at conversations and realize what tricks you used, or failed to use.Do you wear clothes to an office party, or just go natural? Several reviewers have commented that the author or the techniques offered in this book are "plastic" or somehow fake. I don't really agree with that criticism. These social techniques are simply methods for making a more favorable personal impression or more adroitly facilitating interpersonal discourse. Are they "natural?" I don't really understand why it is considered a criticism to offer to teach someone a behavior which is not natural to them. If these techniques are natural to you, then you are wasting your time reading this book. If they are not natural to you, then you could potentially benefit from reading this book. But I can think of few human behaviors which are more natural than the desire to make a favorable social impression. When you go for a job interview do you brush your teeth, or do you just go natural? When you go to an office party do you wear clothes, or do you just go natural? When going on a hot first date do you restrain your flatulence, or do you just act naturally? Get real people, we all tailor our dress and behavior to impress the people we feel a desire to impress.I personally utilize very few of the techniques contained in this book, but then again I have very little desire to climb most social or corporate ladders. I do occasionally have clients who ask me to help them improve their social skills, so I like to have some familiarity with recommended social behaviors. The skills and behaviors outlined in this book can improve your social presentation if you take the time to practice them until they feel natural. Like every thing else in life, practice does lessen our natural imperfections.

Bad Blood Download

ISBN: B07BMCMS5L
Title: Bad Blood Pdf Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup

*A national best seller*

One of the Best Books of 2018: NPR, New York Times Book Review, Inc., TIME, Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post   The McKinsey Business Book of the Year

"The story is even crazier than I expected, and I found myself unable to put it down once I started. This book has everything: elaborate scams, corporate intrigue, magazine cover stories, ruined family relationships, and the demise of a company once valued at nearly $10 billion." (Bill Gates)

The full inside story of the breathtaking rise and shocking collapse of Theranos, the multibillion-dollar biotech startup, by the prize-winning journalist who first broke the story and pursued it to the end, despite pressure from its charismatic CEO and threats by her lawyers.

In 2014, Theranos founder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes was widely seen as the female Steve Jobs: a brilliant Stanford dropout whose startup "unicorn" promised to revolutionize the medical industry with a machine that would make blood testing significantly faster and easier. Backed by investors such as Larry Ellison and Tim Draper, Theranos sold shares in a fundraising round that valued the company at more than $9 billion, putting Holmes' worth at an estimated $4.7 billion. There was just one problem: The technology didn't work.

A riveting story of the biggest corporate fraud since Enron, a tale of ambition and hubris set amid the bold promises of Silicon Valley.

Impossibly too good to be true This is an impeccably researched and referenced account of the Theranos saga. As a long-time observer and sometime competitor of Theranos I watched this tale unfold whilst working at a couple of established IVD companies. Everyone I knew who had ever developed an assay or instrument knew this was smoke and mirrors, impossibly too good to be true. What I never suspected was just how personally dishonest EH had been, and for how long the complex deception was maintained. Whilst I've met a few egregious individuals working for big companies, there are enough checks and balances (QA/RA, Med/Sci Affairs, CLSs and other professionals etc) in place to stop harmful devices getting out the door. The subject matter - developing devices and assays - is a complex dry topic, difficult to write engagingly about. But JC does a workmanlike job and I read this in one go after its midnight Kindle release. My only nit to pick is the poor editing: there are so many uses of '....named....' as in 'an engineer named John Smith' or 'a restaurant named Joe's Bar' that it got irritating. Find/replace 'named' with a comma would have worked fine in most cases. The text was also repetitive - eg '...an award named after Channing...' gets at least 2 mentions. But not enough to lose a star.Kudos to the good people at Theranos who had the courage to get the story out and for JCs persistence into a headwind of legalistic intimidation. I've heard Theranos is now a case-study for MBA students: this book should be required reading for anyone thinking about 'disrupting' the medical devices industry. There are lives at stake.Fascinating, horrifying, and richly detailed account of corporate ambition gone awry. I started this book and could not put it down. It's a horrifying true story of a driven entrepreneur whose only overriding goal was to become insanely rich. And she would do anything, any unimagineable thing, to get there.Elizabeth Holmes leveraged her family's high profile connections to draw in early investors and supporters, who were not very inquisitive on details, nor very skeptical in nature. Drawing on the good name and reputation of these early supporters, she was able to build an impressive roster of other supporters with stellar reputations in tech and venture capital circles. From there, it was just a matter of stage managing the house of cards she was building.Holmes crafted a Potemkin village that had fooled investors, customers, and visiting dignitaries. Her product demonstrations were outright theater, staged managed illusions worthy of David Copperfield. Theranos employees in on the ruse were assured it was just temporary, until the actual product could be perfected and the results repeatable. That day would never come. Those on the outside who also worked in this field had well founded and grave doubts about how Theranos could be touting a product that seemingly defied both logic and physics. Their suspicions, proven to be correct, was that it was too good to be true.Without a trace of guilt or regret, she induced powerful tech workers to leave lucrative careers at other major tech firms, giving up millions in stock options, to come work for Theranos, surely knowing the whole thing would collapse one day. When skeptical board members asked to see data affirming the effectiveness of their product, Holmes would defer, saying those papers were in perpetual legal review. Some employees, when they were no longer useful to her, or deemed disloyal, were immediately and unceremoniously marched out. This is a real life thriller, the story of someone who is a true diabolical movie villain. Holmes is portrayed vividly as a paranoid sociopath who could also be disarming, charmingly manipulative, utterly ruthless and devoid of conscience. This is a tale of corporate greed and lack of regulatory oversight gone all awry.

Three Women Pdf

ISBN: B07NF1M2HG
Title: Three Women Pdf

"I can't imagine a scenario where this isn't one of the more important - and breathlessly debated - books of the year." (Dave Eggers)

From a thrilling new talent, Three Women is an astonishing work of narrative journalism - reported over eight years - about the sex lives and desires of three ordinary American women.

Lina, a homemaker in suburban Indiana, is a decade into a passionless marriage when she embarks on an affair that quickly becomes all-consuming and transforms her life. Sloane, a glamorous entrepreneur in the Northeast, is married to a man who likes to watch her have sex with other men and women. Maggie, a high school student in North Dakota, begins a relationship with her English teacher that will have extraordinary consequences for them both - as well as the community in which they live.

For nearly a decade, Lisa Taddeo, an award-winning journalist and longtime contributor to New York Magazine and Esquire, embedded herself with three everyday women to write this deeply immersive account of their erotic lives and longings. The result - shocking, powerful, and timely - comes across like George Packer's The Unwinding, but for the state of female desire. Three Women is a major work from an exhilarating new voice.

“What would happen if one woman told the truth about her life? The world would split open.” With this book, our world is being blown open through the compelling truths of three women.A review cannot do justice to the brilliance, beauty, and power of this book.Absolutely flawlessly written and overflowing with insights from how a woman's sexuality is often vulnerably formed by life-defining events in our developmental years, to navigating patriarchal confines regarding female advocacy in sexuality, to how this all translates into our comprehensive life experiences as women.Three Women is a must-read.Remarkable “Women shouldn’t judge one another’s lives, if we haven’t been through one another’s fires.”The three women in the book all have different stories but are similar in the sense that they are all feeling unfulfilled with their current situations.I got very emotionally attached to all of these women, I was more invested in two of the three but every single story was compelling and upsetting at the same time. Each chapter shocked me a little more and I found myself frustrated with the feeling that the happiness of these women’s lives was so dependent on the actions of the men around them.It was very easy to get invested in the stories and the writing does not make you feel like you are reading a work of non-fiction. I will say that if you don’t like sexual content in your books that you may want to pass on this one. Otherwise I completely recommend this book.More reviews on Instagram @unshelvededitionPowerful and relatable. This book is insightful and brutal in its truth. I believe that most women can relate to one or all three of these women and their stories. Whether that be remembering the intense feelings of being a teenage girl, or being attracted to someone simply because of the intensity with which they’re attracted to you. Or maybe you’ve been with someone you know isn’t good for you, who doesn’t feel for you with the depth that you feel for them, but you keep going back, because how good it feels when you’re together. Maybe you feel the pressure to be exactly what men (a man) like(s)- to be put-together, sexy, and smart. To never have cracks to show that you have individual wants, needs, and desires that vary from their own. To never show that you have weaknesses or need anything beyond the minimum of what they will give.I think this book is relatable in the strongest sense of the word.

The Man Who Solved the Market Pdf

Title: The Man Who Solved the Market Pdf How Jim Simons Launched the Quant Revolution SHORTLISTED FOR THE FT & MCKINSEY BUSINESS BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARD 2019

SHORTLISTED FOR THE FT AND MCKINSEY BUSINESS BOOK OF THE YEAR AWARD 2019

'Reads more like a delicious page-turning novel...Put it on your holiday gift list for your favourite hedge-fund honcho' Bloomberg

Jim Simons is the greatest moneymaker in modern financial history. His record bests those of legendary investors, including Warren Buffett, George Soros and Ray Dalio. Yet Simons and his strategies are shrouded in mystery. The financial industry has long craved a look inside Simons's secretive hedge fund, Renaissance Technologies and veteran Wall Street Journal reporter Gregory Zuckerman delivers the goods.

After a legendary career as a mathematician and a stint breaking Soviet codes, Simons set out to conquer financial markets with a radical approach. Simons hired physicists, mathematicians and computer scientists - most of whom knew little about finance - to amass piles of data and build algorithms hunting for the deeply hidden patterns in global markets. Experts scoffed, but Simons and his colleagues became some of the richest in the world, their strategy of creating mathematical models and crunching data embraced by almost every industry.

As Renaissance became a major player in the financial world, its executives began exerting influence on other areas. Simons became a major force in scientific research, education and Democratic politics, funding Hilary Clinton's presidential campaign. While senior executive Robert Mercer is more responsible than anyone else for the Trump presidency, placing Steve Bannon in the campaign, funding Trump's victorious 2016 effort and backing alt-right publication Breitbart. Mercer also impacted the success of the Brexit campaign. For all his prescience, Simons failed to anticipate how Mercer's activity would impact his firm and the world.

In this fast-paced narrative, Zuckerman examines how Simons launched a quantitative revolution on Wall Street, and reveals the impact that Simons, the quiet billionaire king of the quants, has had on worlds well beyond finance.

Jim Simons built Medallion, the world's most successful hedge fund, ever. The Man who Solved the Market reads like a novel.Jim Simons built Medallion, the world’s most successful hedge fund ever, virtually pioneering Quantitative Investing, which was regarded as a radical idea at the time. Medallion's reliance upon massive amounts of data and computer driven decisions was the key . He was intrepid, focused, and was a man of extraordinary technical and managerial abilities, which enabled him to amass personal wealth of $23 billion, mainly out of the view of Wall Street. He created great teams and compensated them generously. Having his own money at risk was an inducement to investors, and his competitiveness probably accounted for a great deal of his achievements. Like Simons, his investors were richly rewarded investing with him.The author’s insightful narrative was particularly meaningful because of his extensive access to management, including Simons, which provided vital context for how Medallion was formed, grew and and flourished. Mr. Zuckerman makes the reader aware of the talents, personalities and struggles of each of the principles involved in building Medallion. There are plenty of lessons about how to manage a company from how Simons managed his.Today, Jim Simons’ approach is now more widely accepted in the investment community. There have been many attempts have to emulate him. Yet, no organization has matched his returns.Manuel H.Lazerov, PresidentInfrastructure Financial, Inc.Amazing Book! Far and away, the best book on finance or Wall Street that I have ever read. Probably the best biography I have ever read. It reads like a novel, I couldn't put it down! Jim Simons is quite the character that really comes to life. I knew how private he is so never thought I would learn anything about him or that he would "talk." Clearly, he opened up to Mr. Zuckerman in a way that he never has with anyone else. I most strongly recommend this book for anyone interested in math, finance, Wall Street or just a great biography. Truly a fabulous read.A riveting story of a mathematician who learned how to build a team A completely engrossing book you will find hard to put down. Jim Simons used applied math to build the greatest money-making machine in Wall Street history. But this is really a rich human story of how Simons built a team of fascinating and brilliant personalities.Along the way, Zuckerman also tells the story of the radical change in the investment world: “MBAs once scoffed at the thought of relying on a scientific and systematic approach to investing, confident they could hire coders if they were ever needed. Today, coders say the same thing about MBAs, if they think about them at all.”

Practical Programming for Strength Training Download

ISBN: 0982522754
Title: Practical Programming for Strength Training Pdf
Author: Mark Rippetoe
Published Date: 2014-01-14
Page: 256

Mark Rippetoe is the author of Starting Strength: Basic Barbell Training, Practical Programming for Strength Training, Strong Enough?, Mean Ol Mr. Gravity, and numerous journal, magazine and internet articles. He has worked in the fitness industry since 1978, and has been the owner of the Wichita Falls Athletic Club since 1984. He was in the first group certified by the National Strength and Conditioning Association as a CSCS in 1985, and the first to formally relinquish that credential in 2009. Rip was a competitive powerlifter for ten years, and has coached many lifters and athletes, and many thousands of people interested in improving their strength and performance. He conducts seminars on this method of barbell training around the country. Andy Baker is the owner of Kingwood Strength and Conditioning in Kingwood, Texas. He has a degree in Sport and Health Science from American Military University. Andy attended Texas A&M University before joining the Marine Corps in 2003. He saw two combat deployments in Iraq before finishing his degree in 2007. Shortly afterward he opened KSC, a private training facility near Houston that offers barbell training to competitive athletes and the general public, as well as program consultation for competitive lifters. Andy is a competitive powerlifter. He lives in Kingwood with his wife Laura and two kids, and spends the tiny amount of spare time he has fishing and hunting.

There is a difference between Exercise and Training. Exercise is physical activity for its own sake, a workout done for the effect it produces today, during the workout or right after you're through. Training is physical activity done with a longer-term goal in mind, the constituent workouts of which are specifically designed to produce that goal. Training is how athletes prepare to win, and how all motivated people approach physical preparation.

Practical Programming for Strength Training 3rd Edition addresses the topic of Training. It details the mechanics of the process, from the basic physiology of adaptation to the specific programs that apply these principles to novice, intermediate, and advanced lifters.

--Each chapter completely updated
--New illustrations and graphics
--Better explanations of the proven programs that have been helping hundreds of thousands of lifters get stronger more efficiently
--Expanded Novice chapter with the details of 3 different approaches to the problem of getting stuck and special approaches for the underweight and overweight trainee
--Expanded Intermediate chapter with 18 separate programs and 11 detailed examples
--Expanded Advanced chapter with detailed examples of 9 different programs
--Expanded Special Populations chapter with example programs for women and masters lifters training through their 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s
--Day-to-day, workout-to-workout, week-by-week detailed programs for every level of training advancement
--The most comprehensive book on the theory and practice of programming for strength training in print

Printed in a new larger format for better display of the programs, PPST3 will be an important addition to your training library.

The Definitive Text on Strength Programing This book was a real "eye opener" for me. I have never seen another book that explains the different approaches to getting stronger. There are hundreds if not thousands of books on "How to Squat" or "How to Deadlift" but I've never seen anything that delves into how to manipulate the variables of recovery, intensity, and volume. I have had to reread some chapters as I am constantly reevaluating how I approach strength programming. Remarkable book that is NOT for beginners for even early intermediates. This is a book for people who want to understand how to make humans stronger over time and the tradeoffs and benefits of manipulating training variables."Get very strong in very little time with very few tools." ...should be the title. Anyone who hopes to advance their strength training past the Novice stage needs this resource. It's a whole book dedicated to developing strength using as few tools, and in as little time as possible. Barbell, plates, rack, lifting shoes, belt, pen, paper, shorts, shirt. That's it. Not the only way to get strong, of course, but the methods are very very effective for people who do other things besides living in the gym. A lot of time-saving advice and strategies that average-joes and athletes alike can benefit from. You better enjoy pushing very hard on barbell exercises though because the whole book centers around them and close variants. Anyone easily demoralized by hard efforts under a bar will need to change their attitude if they want to get anything out of this.Highly Recommended for a Solid Understanding of How to Conduct Strength Training and Why I really enjoyed Practical Programming for Strength Training because it answers many of questions I was left with after reading Rippetoe's Starting Strength book. It has been useful for me as someone who trains, someone who advises his wife on how to train, and someone who demands to know the reasons behind the programs laid out by Rippetoe. The Starting Strength book focuses primarily on the major lifts - how to do them, and why they are done that way. It does a very good job of this and is an invaluable tool for trainees and coaches alike. The end of the book lays out the basic Starting Strength novice program, which is working impressively well for both my wife and me at this time. Staring Strength is an excellent book for what it purports to be: a guide to "starting" strength training. However, the layout of the Novice program laid out is very basic, and it does not answer a lot of the questions that a serious trainee will inevitably start asking: what if I advance beyond the novice stage? What do I do if I'm returning to training after being ill for a few weeks? What if I have an injury? What if someone does not fall within the 18 to 35 age range? Etc. And of course, there is always the burning question of "Why is the program set up as it is?" and the follow-up "What constitutes good programming and why?"Practical Programming for Strength Training answers these and other questions in a very clear, thorough, and well-ordered fashion. It gives the reader a well-rounded understanding of the physiological mechanisms behind strength adaptation, upon which it lays out and justifies the novice, intermediate, and advanced programs. It goes into detail about various circumstances trainees may encounter during their progress towards getting stronger.All-in-all it is a very thorough, easy-to-understand, and well-argued book which provides the serious trainee or coach with a solid foundation in knowledge about programming for strength training.Unless you have considerable competence with barbell training, I would recommend starting with the Starting Strength book before moving on toPractical Programming for Strength Training.
